I have setup a new Hard Drive on my computer and I want to move my Griffith db to it from the old hard drive.  The new HD has my /home partition and the old one has my Griffith db.  I cannot get Griffith on the new HD to open the db on the old HD.  Both are installed on the same computer and the old HD shows up as an additional file systems (180 GB & 10 GB).  Once I get all my files that I want to keep, OFF of the Old HD, I will repartition it also.  Griffith is one of the files I want to get moved from the old HD.  I have tried to open Griffith on the old HD, and I get a "error message" that This database requires newer version of Griffith..  Yet that version of Griffith is the one that made the data base.  I do not know what version is on the old HD, but the new HD has version 0.11.

It would be nice if the new version 0.11 would allow an alternative file path to get the db files.  In other words give the user a choice of file paths to choose from.

OS = Ubuntu 10.10 LTS, New HD (500GB) has several partitions including /home.  Old HD (320 GB) is the one I was using and it has a partition for the OS and related files and a partition for /home/john (180GB)

The best way to move database from one computer to another is to use create/restore backup function from menu. To change the default location of griffith's data files, invoke it with --home NEW_LOCATION (where NEW_LOCATION is the path to the directory with griffith.db file).
If you upgrade database, you cannot use it with older Griffith version anymore (that's why it's better to use create backup/restore backup)

I have Griffith installed on a USB drive.
to launch I use a batch file with this one line:
griffith --home db

In the Griffith directory I have a directory called db where the database files are.
So whenever I launch griffith I launch my batch file called griffith-port.bat and it launches my portable install of griffith and uses a now portable database. (I do not launch griffith by just exicuting griffith.exe anymore as that would revert back to the documents & settings directory).
I hope this helps some people.

By doing the batch file trick you could have multiple databases named what you like and launch a seperate batch file for each, ie:
Main Everyday database in a bat as follows:
griffith --home db
DVD Only database in a bat as follows:
griffith --home db-dvd

Anything you want its endless, just remember the --home db makes griffith look in a directory called db if you want it somewhere else or another name then name it so.
Good Luck all and Merry Christmas

OK Bad news I had a HD crash and when I tried the above my database was nowhere to be seen, turns out my USB drive was not the same letter anymore and just copying the datafiles to the subdirectory did not work either , BUT:
using the following fixed the problem and I have even used my USB drive on another computer accessing my Griffith database;

griffith --home I:\LiberKey\MyDocuments\GDB

(Notice the whole path is there now to my database location, I just check the drive letter before launching griffith and change the I:\ accordingly)

I hope this helps others.

Happy New Year
Steve
