I'm probably confusing things but don't get how the Filter field on the main window is supposed to work.

Close to the top of the main window there is a label "Filter" followed by a text entry field, followed by a little broom, the a drop down menu then the text "By Collection". I'm spelling it out so much in detail to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

Now I thought when I typed into the text entry field of "Filter" griffith would do a text search for my phrase for the field that I selected in the drop down menu, for example Original Title. But this is clearly not happening, I have movied with the word "black" in it but still if I type "black" into the text field the movie list becomes totally empty. If I just type a letter typically some movies remain on the list but they may or may not contain the typed letter.

So basically I have no idea what the purpose of this "Filter" field is Smiley It would be great if I could just type there and I wouldn't need to bring up the search wondow.

For example rhythmox, a popular music collection manager does this with the same mechanism: there is a text entry field, one types into it and then it does a text lookup for the typed phrase. I thought griffith would do something similar, but apparently not.

Something tells me this "Filter" text entry field is useful and I would be really grateful if somebody enlightened me Smiley

Hello,

After having asked for the field names to be sorted alphabetically (discussion here: http://forum.griffith.cc/index.php/topic,1418.msg4781.html#msg4781), there was a problem with rev. 1478 which caused the field names in the drop down list to be sorted alphabetically but without having the input field matching this order as well. When you thought you were filtering one given field, you were actually filtering an entirely different one.

This problem was solved in rev. 1482.

So, the question is : are your field names sorted alphabetically ? If so, are you using rev 1478 ? If so, upgrade to rev. 1482. Otherwise, sorry, it is a different problem for which I have no suggestion.

Hi, I'm using trunk, i.e. r1539 currently, so I guess my problem is not related to what you describe.

By the way I'm using linux if that matters (shouldn't I guess).

Others are happily using the Filter entry form to do text search on the selected field of the drop down menu?

Hi fetchinson,
hope i understamd your question, so i try to answer.

i use it so, that he list me the films in the categories Actions, Drama, Comedy, Monumental etc.
Pic 1 show the filter with the Categories
Pic 2 show where i wrote the categorie  Sammlung = Collection
Pic 3 show the effect when i search, in this case Animation - Zeichentrick
To do it so, you go to every Film you have, go to edit and give him a categorie under the point Collection. Then this point appears in the filter By Collection. Cant explain it better but hope you know what imean. Smiley

I think the screenshots help you more.  Grin
Quality of the pics isnt good but have to resize cause to big.

Thanks a lot!

What you describe is clear, searching by Collection (or Samlung in German). For this you had to add each movie to a collection.

What I'm after though is simply search by director or search by title or search by original title.

How do I do these? For each movie these fields are already defined, so I shouldn't need to edit the records at all.

If you mean this way you have to go to: Extras --> Suchfenster öffnen maybe (open search window) or STRG+S.
Then the window you see in this last pic opend and there you can define the filter options, what you search. Then save the new filter. If the filterbutton isnt to see resize the window from griffith.
Here it works.
In this case for now i made a filter called Quentin and this filter found the 1 Film with Quentin Tarrantino as director i have.  Cheesy

Thanks a lot for the screenshots and explanation!

I thought doing a simple search is easy, simply via typing something into the Filter field, but this is not working.

I highlighted this in the attached pic. So what is the Filter field for?

Hi fetchinson,

can't help you cause by me it is working. If i select originaltitle in the drop down menu, and then i type in the first window a searchword, it appears the searched film.

Sorry, maybe some other guy can help you.

Dang! I figured it out, I used the command line to start griffith but it was pointing to a location (because that location was in my path) which contained an old installation. No matter how much I upgraded to the latest trunk what got executed was the old version.

Huhhhhh, now it works perfectly! Thanks for all your help!

I'm glad the problem is solved!
To avoid such thing to happen again, it would be nice if the about screen could display the revision number (r1539) in addition to the version number (0.12.1) that is already there, this would allow for a quick check and would serve as a reminder to the user that he is no longer using the standard package.
